Due to this, companies that consistently distribute dividends are in high demand. Dividend stocks are excellent for portfolio diversification and stability. What is a dividend and how does it work?
- A corporation pays a part to investors when it has a profit or surplus. The balance is reinvested to support additional growth.
- Big corporations that can't reinvest all of their profits back into the company are more likely to pay dividends. As a return for holding their stocks, companies give investors a part of the proceeds.
- A company's dividend yield reveals how much it is paying out in dividends in relation to its share price. Using the dividend yield formula, you can determine which company pays higher dividends.
- On both regular and preferred shares, companies pay dividends. Contrary to preferred shares, dividend payments on common equities are not guaranteed.
- Not the value of your ownership, but the number of shares, determines the amount. As a result, the dividend yield varies according to the stock's actual market price.
- Companies may pay dividends in the form of cash, stocks, or "scrip dividends," which are expressed as a price per share or as a percentage. In the event that a business declares dividends of 5%, or 0.05 per share, stockholders will gain one share for every twenty shares they own.

Tax on dividend income
Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT) was due on domestic firms that paid dividends until the assessment year 2020–2021 under section 115–O. Previously, the DDT was withheld at the source before the dividend was paid to investors. After March 31, 2021, the govt did away with DDT, nevertheless. Dividends are now taxed in the hands of the shareholders for any distributions made after April 4, 2021. On a receipt basis, the interim dividend is taxable in the hands of the shareholders.
